Location
There are places that defy space and time. That continue to be an authentic reflection of its heritage and the landscape that surrounds them, coloured in by nature’s pallet and elevated by the essence of the people that live there. Comporta is one of those places. Situated on a coast of infinite white sand beaches, between acres of pine trees and lush green rice fields, the natural reserve of Comporta is the destination of choice for those who desire to disconnect and embrace the best of nature whilst living an authentic experience.
Author/Architect
“Comporta holds a very dear place in my heart. It is part of my identity, heritage and family tradition. The very core of what defines Comporta – a place where families and friends reunite and come together to slow down and reconnect to what’s important in life – is what I envisioned for this project.”
Miguel Câncio Martins
Internationally known for his talent of interpreting a space and transforming it into something unique, Miguel Câncio Martins’ designs and architecture reflect his passion of bringing together a deep sense of harmony, exclusivity and sophistication.
Quinta da Comporta was a long sought out dream that become his first signature project in Portugal. The personal connection Miguel has with the destination reinforces his commitment to perpetuate the authenticity of Comporta, from the preservation of the natural landscape and surrounding ecosystems, to respecting the integration of traditional architecture, the local community and the unique character and history of the location.
Design & Nature
Miguel Câncio Martins designed Quinta da Comporta to be a place where authenticity and simplicity is considered a luxury that remains timeless.
From traditional architectural lines to all décor details, everything at Quinta da Comporta was thought of to be a genuine translation of the local way of living, and at the same time provide a deeper connection to the neighbouring natural reserve for a real journey inwards.
Inspired by the beauty of the surrounding environment, an open and connected to nature concept privileges every room and all outlets with breath taking views. The neutral palette of tones is set by the use of salvaged natural materials of the area, such as wood, wicker, glass and stone with décor motifs designed by local artisans that colour in each space with authenticity.
The result is a Design Concept that is inviting, integrates the community and is faithful to Comporta’s culture both in style and lifestyle without compromising the highest level of comfort and elegance.
“Art, at Quinta da Comporta, doesn't just exist to embellish. Its purpose is to recover the history and tell the region’s story, celebrating everything that makes it unique”

Art as our passion, but also as an invitation to live the experience of Comporta with all your senses, can be found in many details around our resort, adding layers of inspiration to an already immersive natural narrative. From the emblematic permanent pieces you can discover by renown local artists that honour Comporta’s heritage, to other treasures such as the decorative ‘carpets’ designed in different spaces throughout the property that create a comfortable welcome or the suspended ‘stork's nest’ made of wood in our Inari restaurant that reminds us of how precious our community of birds are, here, every detail is part of something bigger. A (hi)story, that is slowly unveiled during your time with us, from the more prominent to the more discreet “natural” elements like the classical Bordallo Pinheiro snails escaping our lounge or temporary ones like the figurine inside, created with materials collected from the beach that reinforce our commitment to sustainability, inviting you to live art in all its different expressions.
VALQUÍRIA INARI, Joana Vasconcelos. 2024.
Suspended in our Restaurant INARI, a 800-square-meter warehouse, built upon the original plot that once served as the place where rice was stored and threshed, Valquíria Inari tells a story that naturally merges with that of Comporta. The monumental sculpture from the internationally renowned Portuguese artist's emblematic Valkyrie series draws inspiration from the Japanese mythological deity Inari Ōkami, who represents prosperity in the cultivation and harvesting of rice and gives name to our resort’s Restaurant where this stunning artwork is housed.
RICE HARVESTER, Vhils. 2020.
A tribute to the local community’s agricultural heritage, the contemporary national artist sculpted the portrait of a traditional “ceifeira” or rice harvester, reminding us all of those who cultivated this fertile land over centuries. Easily sighted on the main structure’s forefront wall, with the Eira and the rice fields in full display, the history, identity and memory of Carvalhal’s village are honoured in this figure that is intrinsically rooted in Comporta’s rice harvestings tradition.
AZULEJO PANEL, André Saraiva. 2020.
One of Quinta da Comporta's main accommodation buildings is home to ocean motifs hand-illustrated by André Saraiva on tiles. An invitation to discover the traditional tilework art that is part of Portugal’s cultural identity, this particular artwork made in partnership with the iconic Viúva Lamego, showcases different shades of blue and white, taking us on a journey to stunning beaches of Comporta, as reflection of the link between art and our local context.
