COMPORTA VILLAGE AND SURROUNDINGS

Discover the essence of Comporta by exploring its surrounding treasures. Start in the charming village of Comporta with its rustic center and local shops, then visit the Rice Museum to learn about the region’s agricultural heritage. From there, explore Alcácer do Sal, Melides, and Grândola for a deeper dive into the local culture.

In Melides, visit the Cistas das Casas Velhas Necropolis, a megalithic funerary monument, the Pedra Branca Dolmen, an old  burial tomb used from the late Neolithic to the Chalcolithic periods, the São Pedro Church and the Roman ruins that date back to 3500-2500 B.C. The Olaria Museum Center provides a fascinating glimpse into the region’s pottery craft, a timeless tradition that has deeply influenced the local society, culture and economy. Also, don’t miss discovering Melides Lagoon for a peaceful retreat.

Alcácer do Sal features the impressive Alcácer do Sal Castle, built in the 12th century, and the Senhor dos Mártires Archaeological Station, which was occupied between the 5th and 3rd centuries B.C. This site served as a cemetery for Iron Age cultures, with notable findings such as Greek ceramics, weapons, vessels, and jewellery. The Pedro Nunes Archaeology Museum is another highlight for history enthusiasts.

Grândola hosts remarkable historical sites, including the 15th-century Matriz Church and several megalithic monuments such as Pata do Cavalo and Monte das Boiças. The Lousal monument, a funerary site, testifies to 5000 years of history in Portugal, along with the Castelo Velho do Lousal. These archaeological complexes, as well as the Cerrado do Castelo Roman Villa, offer fascinating insights into the area's past.

For those feeling lucky, try your hand at the nearest casino. And, of course, be sure to visit the hidden beaches tucked behind the rice fields, where you can unwind and enjoy stunning views.
