Sustainability
Every detail of our history and every line of our property was designed to honour the nature that surrounds us.
~
From construction to daily practices and our commitment for the future, we follow a path of respect and ecological responsibility, in perfect harmony with Comporta's unique ecosystem.
FROM THE ORIGIN
Always concerned with preserving the balance of the natural reserve, Quinta da Comporta was built to integrate harmoniously into its surroundings, respecting the pre-existing architectural tradition, seeking natural energy efficiency solutions and upholding the cultural significance of the property within the village of Carvalhal.
~
- The architectural plan was designed to take advantage of natural resources, such as the positioning of the buildings, the use of large glazed surfaces to optimise the use of sunlight, or the choice of generous ceiling heights allowing air to be stratified, thus reducing the need for air conditioning and lighting.
- Favouring natural materials, specially reclaimed wood, significantly reduced the environmental impact when compared to concrete alternatives.
- All the rubble was reused in the inevitable process of levelling the land.
- The Oryza Spa and Inari Restaurant buildings recreate the old rice barns while our Pool Villas integrate the traditional lines of the region's architecture in a reference to the old fishermen's cabanas. The central accommodation structure respects the characteristic Alentejo style of whitewashed houses with blue details.
- The Eira, the centre of the property and a cultural symbol of the region (as it was here that the harvested rice was threshed and dried), has remained intact and continues to be used today as a community meeting place.
ON A DAILY BASIS
Our commitment to sustainability is reflected every day at Quinta da Comporta. Every ‘small change’ or daily action has an impact on reducing the footprint that results from the resort's operational activities.
~
- We use more than 600m2 of solar thermal and photovoltaic panels to generate energy and heat the resort's water and heat pumps for air conditioning and to heat the swimming pools, prioritising clean energy sources.
- We use groundwater for irrigation, utilising natural resources intelligently and efficiently.
- Bed linen and bath towels are replaced every three days and washed during the day to take advantage of the heated water and energy produced by our solar panels.
- All the lighting at Quinta da Comporta is low-consumption, using LED technology.
- The use of plastic is generally reduced throughout the operation, with the promotion of the use of reusable water bottles in each room and the elimination of single-use plastics.
- We are committed to a sustainable approach to mobility. The property's paths are for the exclusive use of electric buggies, bicycles and electric bikes. For our employees' transport outside the property and in the Comporta and Grândola area, we have replaced fossil fuel vehicles with electric fleets. Our garage also has 20 charging points for electric/hybrid cars for our guests.
- Our garden’s one and a half hectare of land is planted with an abundance of vegetables, fruit and aromatic herbs each season. In addition to our own harvests, we work with local suppliers, always favouring fresh, seasonal and local ingredients in the dishes we serve at our Inari restaurant.
- The resort's ecological consciousness extends to the use of locally sourced materials and artefacts that artisans continue to work on genuinely. Bunho and wicker decorative details, rustic wooden furniture, traditional ceramics and tableware from Aveiro to Caldas da Rainha, as well as other carefully chosen pieces, are part of everyday life at Quinta da Comporta.
LEGACY FOR THE FUTURE
Quinta da Comporta believes that real change happens when everyone gets involved. And this path doesn't end with what we have done and continue to do. In our multidimensional vision of sustainability, there is a goal of continuously improving efforts to have a positive impact on the economy, the community and the environment.
~
- We invite our guests to choose to adopt more sustainable practices during their stay, such as reusing glass bottles and using the water points available, thus contributing to our 0-bottle policy.
- By sharing the natural beauty that surrounds us and telling the rich history of this region, from its fishing and rice-growing heritage to local myths and legends, we promote a sense of belonging and inspire respect for our land and the local people.
- Art pieces by local artists are privileged at Quinta da Comporta. Each piece aims to tell and recapture the history of this place, celebrating everything that makes it unique. Vhils sculpted the portrait of a Woman harvester who keeps alive the collective memory of the community linked to rice cultivation; in one of the main accommodation buildings you can see Ocean motifs illustrated by André Saraiva on tile panels developed in partnership with the iconic Viúva Lamego, referring to the proximity of the Atlantic as an identity trait of Comporta; Joana Vasconcelos' Valquíria Inari, created in a multiplicity of materials and techniques that allude to the typical crafts and know-how of the entire Alentejo region, evokes the rice fields of Comporta.
- There is a concern to hire most of the people locally to create value in the community and the local economy.
- We collaborate with a network of local partners who provide products and services, particularly in the field of tourism activities. This commitment favours the economic growth of the region and supports the development of businesses in the area.
- We support local initiatives such as the Carvalhal village festival and the Sweet Potato Festival.
- We cultivate a close relationship with the community by contributing to growing and improving the quality of life in the region. We have already carried out a project for a senior citizens' residence, joined forces to fund a new fire station in Carvalhal, and are in the process of building a church for the village.
